The three treasures of Mount Emei are ancient Buddhist teeth, the Wanli Golden Seal, and the Beiye Scripture. These three treasures are all collected in Wannian Temple, which is one of the oldest ancient temples on Mount Emei.
The ancient Buddha’s tooth is a 42.66cm long and 6.5kg heavy tooth, as smooth as jade, with purple stripes shining in golden yellow. According to Professor Yang Zhongjian, a paleontologist in China, this Buddha tooth is a fossilized tooth of a southern Chinese saber toothed elephant from 200000 years ago. It was brought back from Sri Lanka by a Song Dynasty monk and is known as the “Buddha tooth”.
The Wanli gold seal measures 13 centimeters in length and width, with the six characters “Precious Treasure of Samantabhadra” engraved in the center, “Great Ming Wanli” engraved above, “Imperial Inscription Brick Hall” engraved on the left, and “Imperial Gift to Eshan” engraved on the right. This golden seal was bestowed by Emperor Wanli of the Ming Dynasty on the occasion of the 60th birthday of his mother, Empress Dowager Cixing, symbolizing the royal family’s respect and support for Buddhism.
The Avatamsaka Sutra is a 246 page text written in Sanskrit on the leaves of the Betula tree. Before the invention of papermaking, ancient Indian monks often used this type of leaf to write Buddhist scriptures.
These treasures not only have historical value, but also carry profound cultural significance, attracting numerous tourists and scholars to visit.
